What you need to know about Manama

Manama, the modern capital of the gulf island nation of Bahrain, has been at the center of major trade routes since antiquity. Its acclaimed Bahrain National Museum showcases artifacts from the ancient Dilmun civilization that flourished in the region for millennia. The city’s thriving Bab el-Bahrain Souq offers wares from colorful handwoven fabrics and spices to pearls.
The city has an approximate population of 200,000 people as of 2020. Long an important trading center in the Persian Gulf, Manama is home to a very diverse population. After periods of Portuguese and Persian control and invasions from the ruling dynasties of Saudi Arabia and Oman, Bahrain established itself as an independent nation in 1971 after a period of British hegemony.

Currency

The dinar is the currency of Bahrain. It is divided into 1000 fils (فلس). The Bahraini dinar is abbreviated د.ب (Arabic) or BD (Latin). It is usually represented with three decimal places denoting the fils.

The name dinar derives from the Roman denarius.

As of December 2021, the Bahraini dinar is the second highest-valued currency unit, at 2.65 United States dollars per unit (the highest-valued unit is the Kuwaiti dinar at $3.32).

Language

Bahrani Arabic (also known as Bahrani and Baharna Arabic) is a variety of Arabic spoken in Eastern Arabia and Oman. In Bahrain, the dialect is primarily spoken in Shia villages and some parts of Manama. The Bahrani Arabic dialect has been significantly influenced by the ancient Aramaic, Syriac and Akkadian languages.

The Ministry of Education of Bahrain operates public government schools.

Girls schools include A’amena bint Wahab Primary Girls School, Al-Muharraq Primary Girls School, Mariam bent Omran Primary Girls School, Zubaida Primary Girls School, Istiklal, Khadija al-Kubra Intermediate Girls School, Zanoobia Intermediate Girls School, and Muharraq Secondary Girls School.
The French School of Bahrain is located in Busaiteen, in Muharraq Municipality.

Climate

In Manama, the summers are long, sweltering, oppressive, and arid; the winters are cool, dry, and windy; and it is mostly clear year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 58°F to 102°F and is rarely below 52°F or above 107°F.

Based on the beach/pool score, the best times of year to visit Manama for hot-weather activities are from early April to mid May and from mid October to late November.
